The Boat Between Two Islands

Opening Frame

I decided to walk across the Yellow Bridge, between Lembongan and Ceningan Island today.

Not because I had to.
Just didn’t feel like sitting on the back of a motorcycle again.

My legs were a bit sore, from sitting there all day driving on bumby roads.
And I felt like slowing things down.

The Shift

It’s a small change.

Walking instead of riding.

But everything feels different when you do.

You notice more.

The way the light hits the water.
The small boats moving between Lembongan and Ceningan.
The sounds coming up from below the bridge.

Things that are always there.

Just not always seen.

The Moment

That’s when I saw it.

A small boat moving between the two islands.

Ten men standing.
Close together.
No seats. No space.

And one man at the front, quietly steering the whole thing.

What It Looks Like

From a distance, it looks unstable.

Too much weight.
Too little room.

Like it shouldn’t work.

But it does.

What’s Actually Happening

No one is talking.

No instructions.
No visible coordination.

They don’t look focused.
If anything, they seem relaxed.

One of the men is looking at his phone.
Two others are lightly holding the shoulders of the man in front of them.

Another one is smiling, looking in my direction.

Still, the boat keeps moving.

Small shifts.
Weight adjusting without anyone making a thing out of it.

Like they’ve done it so many times
it no longer needs attention.

What Most People Miss

Most people cross the bridge quickly.

On a motorcycle.
On their phone.
Focused on getting to the other side.

And it makes sense.

There’s always somewhere to be.

But moments like this sit just below that pace.

Easy to miss.

The Nomad Over 50 Lens

After a while, you start to notice the difference.

Not just in places.
But in how you move through them.

You don’t need to see everything.

But you start seeing what’s there.

Closing

The boat kept moving until it disappeared out of sight.

Nothing dramatic.
Nothing to stop for.

Unless you already had.
