Where to Stay in Penang: George Town vs Outside the UNESCO Area

One of the first decisions you’ll make in Penang is where to stay.

And honestly, it changes the entire experience.

Especially if you’re staying longer than just a few days.

At first, staying directly inside George Town’s UNESCO area seems like the obvious choice.

That’s where:

  • The street art is
  • The cafés are
  • The heritage buildings are
  • The famous food streets are
  • The loudest bars are

It’s the version of Penang most people imagine before arriving.

And I understand why.

I liked it too.

But after spending a few weeks in Penang, I realized something:

Exploring George Town and living there are not necessarily the same thing.

Staying Inside George Town’s UNESCO Area

There’s no question that the UNESCO zone has atmosphere.

You can walk almost everywhere.

There’s always something happening.

Street art.

Markets.

Food stalls.

Tourists.

Old buildings.

Bars and cafés.

For shorter stays, it makes a lot of sense.

George Town is also the part of Penang most visitors come to experience.

Especially if:

  • It’s your first time in Penang
  • You want walkability
  • You enjoy busy urban environments
  • You want easy access to food and nightlife

And visually, it’s probably the most interesting part of Penang.

But after a while, I started noticing the trade-offs.

The area can feel:

  • dense
  • busy
  • tourist-oriented
  • to salesly
  • slightly repetitive over time

The same streets that feel exciting for two days can feel very different after three weeks.

That doesn’t mean the UNESCO area is bad.

Not at all.

It just depends on how you travel.

Why I Stayed Outside the UNESCO Area

I ended up staying outside the old town in a modern apartment in the northern part of the Jelutong area.

And honestly, it fit my lifestyle much better.

I wrote much more about it here.

I still had easy access to George Town with Grab. It costs less than 2EUR to get downtown.

But I also had:

  • more space
  • quieter surroundings
  • easier routines
  • modern conveniences
  • less noise
  • A washing machine in the apartment

You start to appreciate that a lot when you travel full-time.

That balance mattered more than I expected.

Especially as a digital nomad over 50.

At this stage, I value:

  • comfort
  • routine
  • breathing room

more than being in the center of everything 24/7.

And staying outside the UNESCO area gave me that.

I broke down my actual day-to-day costs in Penang here.

The Biggest Difference: Access vs Immersion

This is probably the simplest way I can explain it.

Staying inside the UNESCO area feels like immersion.

Staying outside it feels like access.

And for me, access worked better in Penang.

I could:

  • Visit the old town
  • Explore cafés
  • Eat street food
  • Walk the waterfront

…and then leave when I wanted to. Back to just being me.

That created a healthier rhythm for longer stays.

What Type of Traveler Each Area Fits

Stay Inside George Town If You Want:

  • walkability
  • street life
  • cafés and bars nearby
  • cultural atmosphere
  • shorter stays
  • constant activity

Stay Outside the UNESCO Area If You Want:

  • quieter living
  • more space
  • modern apartments
  • easier routines
  • less tourist density
  • longer stays
  • Do you own laundry

Neither is objectively better.

They just create very different experiences.

Is Penang Good for Digital Nomads?

Overall, yes.

Especially if you value:

  • comfort
  • affordability
  • infrastructure
  • slower rhythm
  • Fast internet

I wrote more about being a digital nomad over 50 here.

But where you stay matters a lot.

More than I expected before arriving.

So… Where Would I Stay Again?

Outside the UNESCO area.

Without hesitation.

Not because I disliked George Town.

Actually, the opposite.

I liked it more once I stopped trying to live directly inside it.

That balance between exploration and distance worked better for me.

Especially long-term.

Final Thought

George Town is where I explored Penang.

But staying outside of it was what made Penang livable for me.

And that distinction ended up mattering more than I expected.
